This allowed us to very quickly refine a rough house layout that would satisfy our high level needs.
Once we had a rough workable layout, i used the semiautomated tools from visio to create walls, doors and windows and refine the layout.
This rather quickly identified that the lack of a third dimension makes it extremely difficult to visualise how people will move through the spaces that one is designing.
For example, what will a central corridor feel like under a cathedral ceiling rising to around 5m?
As a result, i decided to build a model of the house.
There are many ways to build an architectural model, paper, card, plastic and so on.
Consisting of a layer of polystyrene foam faced on both sides with heavy paper, foam core is very easy to cut and work and comes in different thicknesses.
In my case i used 10mm board for the baseboard, 5mm board for external walls and 3mm board for internal walls.
This closely correlated to the thicknesses of various parts of the building at a scale of 1:50.
I painstakingly transferred dimensions from the visio model onto strips of foam core cutting and rebating and gluing until i had reproduced all internal and external walls.
This was very difficult and while it eventually produced a model that accurately represented the visio diagram, the building took something like 12 or 14 hours to construct.
While expensive, the process really gave me a good feel for the nature of the space that i was working with.
This in turn lead to extensive reworking of certain aspects of the design.
At this point in the process the working design called for the use of sips so we decided to include lofts with a bridge crossing the central open area.
Sips lend themselves well to this sort of construction.
So, a second model was begun.
This time, i printed two sets of floorplans to a scale of 1:50.
The first was glued to the baseboard with spray adhesive while the second was kept free.
I also fabricated a few handy tools including an adjustable holder for a hobby blade that made it possible to cut the board to a precise depth making rebating, rabbit joints and so on much easier.
Having the printed, annotated plan on the board also simplified placement of components.
This second model took between 812 hours to complete.
No sooner had this model been complete than another round of modifications was begun.
There had to be a better way!
Next time, back to the computer
Ï»¿ inch my showcase i applied 10mm board for the baseboard 5mm board for external walls and 3mm board for internal walls.
I fastidiously removed proportions from the visio model onto strips of foam core cutting and rebating and gluing until i had reproduced all internal and external walls.
This was really unmanageable and while it eventually created a model that accurately represented the visio diagram the building took something like 12 or 14 hours to construct.
